Description

This building, known as 1 Carlos Place, was constructed between 1891 and 1893 as flats by J E Trollope of Giles, Gough and Trollope. It features red brick with stone dressings and a stone ground floor, topped with slate roofs, and showcases Flemish-Renaissance architectural details. The structure consists of four storeys, basements, and an attic with gables and dormers. It has ten bays facing Mount Street and a two-bay return to Carpenter Street.

The stone-faced ground floor, originally intended for shops but adapted for flats upon completion, is framed by debased Ionic pilasters and features mullioned-transomed flat arched windows along with flanking round arched recessed doorways. A balustraded stone balcony supports the first floor. The entrance to No 6 is splayed at the corner. Above the paired doorways of Nos 8 and 9, there is a canted eight-light bay window extending through the first and second floors. A single-width canted bay window rises above the doorway of No 1 Carlos Place, and a similar five-light bay window is positioned above the entrance to No 6. Canted bays also appear on the Carpenter Street return. Other windows consist of two lights with mullions and transoms. The building features sill bands and cornice bands on all floors, along with decorative detailing on the gables. It is part of the same development by the same architect as Nos 2 to 8 Carlos Place and is included for its group interest in Mount Street, which was part of the rebuilding for the Grosvenor Estate in the 1880s and 1890s.
