Description
This building comprises shops and residential flats located at 104-108 Mount Street, constructed between 1886 and 1887 by Ernest George and Peto. It is built of pinkish buff Doulton terracotta with tiled roofs. The architectural style is a restrained late Gothic, incorporating flamboyant decorative elements.
The building is three storeys high, with a basement and gabled attics. It features two bays per property. The ground floor has a deeply arcaded design, with slightly rounded piers and segmental arches that frame the shop fronts and doorways. A pierced-work parapet runs above the ground floor. The upper floors contain mullioned-transomed windows with two lights, incorporating extensive tracery work to the heads. Two square bay windows have similar mullioned-transomed windows rising through the upper floors to gabled roofs, flanked by finials. Dormers were inserted in the mid-20th century. Gothicised area railings have been added. The rear elevation, facing St George’s Gardens, is of brick and is plainer, with lower windows featuring segmental arches and square heads above. A parapet runs along the roofline.
