Description

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic church of 1844-49, originally designed by J.J. Scoles, and with later additions by H. Clutton and W.H. Romaine-Walker. Constructed in the Decorated Gothic style, it is built of coursed rubble with fine dressings. The south entrance front features a gable and rose window. The interior boasts red polished granite clustered columns supporting the nave arcade. It contains fine fittings and furnishings, including a high altar by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, and several side altars, some by A.E. Purdie, incorporating contemporary sculpture, metalwork, paintings, mosaic, and stained glass. The west front was redesigned in 1951 by Adrian Gilbert Scott, who also designed a new west window by Evie Hone.
