Description
Nos 27 and 28 Berkeley Square are a pair of mid-18th century townhouses that have undergone some alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of stock brick with a stuccoed ground floor and feature slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys, with a basement and a mansard attic, and each has three window fronts. There is a main cornice above the second floor and a cornice with a blocking course above the third floor. The shop fronts were modified in the mid-20th century. No 28 has a doorway to the left, which is accessed by a flight of steps and features a round-headed design with a radial glazed fanlight. Both houses have sash windows, although No 27 has later glazing and alterations to its third floor. A continuous early 19th century cast iron balcony is present on the first floor. No 27 has modifications made by the architect Goodhart-Rendel in 1910. Inside, No 28 retains a cut string stone staircase with a wrought iron handrail, which is also found in No 27 above the altered ground floor.
