Description

This is a row of terraced townhouses located on Crawford Street and Gloucester Place in the City of Westminster, dating to around 1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco detailing, featuring banded rustication on the ground floors. They have slate roofs, largely hidden from view, and extend over four storeys with basements, some incorporating a fifth floor or dormered mansards. Each house has a three-window front. A semicircular arched doorway is located on the right-hand side of the properties, containing panelled doors with side lights, pilastered jambs and Coade stone imposts beneath delicately patterned fanlights with lead ornamentation. Number 84 features Coade stone vermiculated rustic blocks and voussoirs with a figured keystone. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, some with glazing bars, set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor stucco, and stucco crowning cornices and blocking courses adorn the facades. Original cast iron balconies, displaying geometric and anthemion patterns, are present on the first floor. Cast iron area railings, finished with urn finials, are also original features. The row forms part of a remarkably extensive and well-preserved sequence of Georgian terraced houses in London.
