Description
This is a row of terraced townhouses located at 72-76 Gloucester Place, in the City of Westminster, dating from approximately 1790 to 1800. They were built as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco banding to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. The arrangement is of four storeys and basements, with each house featuring a three-window front.
The entrances are located on the left side of each house, each containing a semicircular arched doorway with a panelled door, side lights, Coade stone imposts, and a delicately patterned fanlight with lead ornament. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, each set under a flat, gauged arch. A stucco plat band runs above the ground floor, and a crowning cornice and blocking course top the facades. Original cast iron balconies with a geometric pattern are present on the first floor. The properties also retain cast iron area railings with urn finials. The terraced houses form part of a particularly extensive and intact sequence of Georgian architecture in London.
