Description

No. 84 Maida Vale is a detached house, likely dating to around 1850, with some sources suggesting a construction date of 1857. It is built of stock brick with stucco dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The house is a double-fronted villa, featuring a central hall and staircase, along with through rooms on the ground floor, and a double depth on the first floor. The building comprises two storeys, a basement, and an attic, exhibiting three windows across the front. A central panelled front door is sheltered by an Ionic porch, now accessed by a flight of modern tiled steps. Tall sash windows flank the door, each framed by eared stucco architraves and containing plate glass. A first-floor band runs along the elevation. The first-floor windows are also plate glass sashes, set within stucco architraves. A stucco cornice and parapet top the facade, concealing the roof from street view. The rear elevation retains much of its original character, featuring a central door leading to a flight of steps, flanked by tall windows. A six-pane window is positioned above the doorway, and is flanked by sixteen-pane sashes. Two large, flat-topped dormers are present, with a smaller one set between them. The interior boasts contemporary features, including stained glass to the hall screen and stair window. The open-string staircase features two iron balusters to each step and a mahogany handrail. A marble fire surround is located in the ground floor room on the left.
