Description
Claremont Villa is a detached house built around 1840. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a shallow pitched slate roof with paired brackets at the wide eaves and moulded stacks on the left side. The building is three storeys high with a basement and has a single window range. There are returned moulded sill string courses on the upper floors and six-over-six pane sash windows. The first floor includes a balconette, which is flanked by narrow paired fluted pilasters and consoles that support a cornice. To the left, there is a three-panel door in a plain opening, which has an overlight and a diagonally set square panel above two bead-edged lower panels. The right return of the building steps out to the right, creating an inverted angle at the right-hand quoin. The gable wall was rebuilt in the 1980s.
Inside, the villa was recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1988. The original sash windows have been replaced with Victorian ones. The staircase features turned wooden rails and a handrail believed to be made of fruitwood. Several fireplaces and original features have been removed. A photo from 1983 by Bath Council shows stencilled cornices on the first floor. The stone staircase has wooden balusters, and the first-floor front room includes a flower guard with diagonal trellising interspersed with lead stars. The basement has a flagstone floor and a Tudor arch over the range.
