Description
The Towers is a detached house set in extensive grounds above Rivers Road. It likely has an original core from the late 18th century, but was significantly enlarged and refronted in the mid-19th century, with further alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features slate roofs with moulded axial stacks.
The house has a double depth plan with side and rear wings and stands two storeys high. The central block has three bays and is flanked by taller wings with circular corner towers. The windows are plate glass sash types. The central block features a hipped roof with wide 20th-century boxed eaves, flanking pilasters, and a ground floor platband. The ground floor openings have extended sills set in shouldered arched recesses with splayed reveals, and there is a 20th-century front door. The first floor windows are adorned with narrow reeded architraves and roundels in the upper corners.
The taller wings connect to the circular corner towers, each with three windows. These towers have coped parapets, cornices, and stepped friezes, along with ground floor platbands. The first floor windows are set in flat-arched recesses, while the ground floor windows are in semicircular arched recesses, all with extended sills. The left tower features a curved stone balcony on moulded stone brackets, complete with a fine iron balustrade.
At the rear left, there is a wider gabled three-storey range from the late 19th century, which has a machicolated parapet at the front, a coped gable on the return, and moulded sill strings with roll-moulded arrises on the architraves. The original central block was reportedly named Beacon Cottage, and the building showcases its picturesque composition and multiple phases of development. The interior has not been inspected.
