Description
Mount Beacon House is a detached house set in its own grounds, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with 20th-century additions and an extension made around 1920 to serve as a nursing home. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar with slate roofs and moulded stacks.
The original block has a double depth plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring a three-window range on the south facade. The coped parapet and cornice follow the contour of the flat left-hand range, which has altered windows. The right-hand range is full height and segmental-curved, showcasing tripartite windows with three/six-pane sashes flanked by two/four-pane sashes in the attic. The full height six/six-pane sashes on the ground and first floors are flanked by glazed doors with similar panes, and there is a trellised balcony on the first floor with curved steps leading to the ground floor.
A second-floor platband spans the curved bay, which has been altered to a cornice on the left-hand bay, continuing across the lower three-storey, three-window block added in a Georgian style in 1920. The right return of the original block features painted surrounds to the six/six-pane sash windows on the second floor, a 20th-century conservatory over a Georgian-style porch, and a six/six-pane sash window to the right of the first floor, with a blind window to the left and a 20th-century door and window on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
