Description

The Cedars is a house built around 1855, designed in the Italianate villa style. It features rendered brickwork, likely with a stone basement, and a Welsh slate roof. The property has a cast-iron balcony supported by cast-iron brackets.

The house is two storeys tall with a basement and includes a three-storey tower above the entrance. The entrance front, facing west, has a tower that projects to the left. The ground floor has a three-bay loggia, with a band above it, and the first floor features 3/6 sash windows with a tooled architrave and a cornice that aligns with the eaves. The tower gable includes a round-arched, two-light window, and pilaster strips frame each floor. To the right, there is a blank wall with a projecting stack and string, topped by a tall chimney with paired shafts.

On the south front, there is a two-storey canted bay to the left with sash windows set within the gable. To the right, there are two windows: large pane sashes with six lights below and nine lights above, all within architraves. The eaves project on brackets.

The east front reveals a basement due to the sloping ground. It features a three-storey canted bay to the left, similar to the south front, and a ground floor balcony. To the right, there is one window: a 6/6 sash on the ground floor and a 3/6 sash on the first floor.

Inside, The Cedars retains its complete Victorian joinery and layout. The stone openwell staircase has two trussed balusters at each head and a mahogany rail with a curtail. There is a three-light arched window on the staircase. All doors, shutters, cornices, and fire surrounds are intact, with some grates remaining. The first-floor rooms are plain, and there is a back stair leading from the basement to the first floor. The basement includes a full cellar, a laundry area with a copper and boiler, and the kitchen yard retains sheds and offices. Overall, The Cedars is a remarkably complete Victorian villa, with only 20th-century plumbing alterations in the upper rooms.
