Description
Hallow Bank is a house built in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It features painted brick under plain clay tile roofs and stone sills. The house has tall brick stacks on the rear roof slopes, all with oversailing detail. The entrance is marked by a timber doorcase and a cast-iron step leading to a bay window. The original layout is double-fronted and double-depth, with a service range at the rear and a central staircase. The building consists of three ranges with ridges aligned in parallel, with the principal elevation facing south, although the main entrance is now located on the east facade.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with two storeys plus a cellar. It has three first-floor windows: a 6/6 sash flanked by two 8/8 sashes, with matching 8/8 sashes below on the ground floor. All windows are set in plain reveals under flat gauged brick arches with stone sills. The entrance features a 20th-century multi-pane glazed door in an altered opening, with a roll-edged stone step.
The east (gable-end) elevation is asymmetrical, with two first-floor windows: an 8/8 sash and a 6/6 sash, both in plain reveals with sills. The left window is under a flat gauged brick arch, while the right is under a cambered brick arch. There are two semi-circular stone steps leading to a central three-panel door, which is raised and fielded, with a moulded architrave and pilasters supporting a pediment adorned with ornate carved console brackets and dentils. The entrance is flanked by elliptical windows. To the left, there is a canted bay window featuring a 6/6 sash, another 6/6 sash, and a 12-pane side-hung casement/door, with an access step.
The interior has not been inspected. Historical evidence shows that the entrance drive was realigned to access the east facade between 1940 and around 1965. The 1886 Ordnance Survey map identifies the property as 'Henwick Farm'.
