Description
The summer house in the gardens at Parkfield dates from around 1870 to 1880. It features a timber frame with patterned, glazed ceramic tile infill and rendered infill at the rear, resting on a base of brick and ashlar. The building has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by console brackets, and the ridge is decorated with wrought ironwork. It is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan and canted ends, showcasing long rectangular panels with narrow upper panels.
The front elevation, facing east, includes a slightly projecting, low-pitched gable on console brackets, adorned with decorative bracing above and below the collar. In the center, there is a round-headed archway flanked by shorter similar archways, all made of carved and moulded timber. Above the gable, there is ceramic tile infill. The east side lights of the bays are also arched and feature wrought iron railings in the lower open panel, with tiled infill in the upper panel.
Inside, the roof is constructed with a moulded king-post truss and has a pendant. All interior panels are tiled, and the upper rear panels display ceramic faces of gods set within circular surrounds. There is a low wooden bench against the rear and side walls, with a tiled frieze beneath, and the floor is patterned with tiles.
