Description
The Gheluvelt Park Band Stand in Worcester is a cast-iron structure dating from around 1923, located on an island in the center of an ornamental pond. It was a gift from Alfred Wiggin, the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, in May 1923, coinciding with the park's development as a municipal amenity and war memorial. A wooden bridge, also given by James Ward at the same time, connects the band stand to the northern shore of the pond.
The octagonal band stand is situated on a circular island, which features stone blocks around its edge and a concrete upper surface with a brick kerb leading up to the bandstand. The bandstand itself is supported by eight cast-iron columns, each adorned with decorative capitals and bases. A balustrade made of wrought and cast iron surrounds the lower part of the bandstand. Above the capitals, arched brackets display foliage tracery in their spandrels. The roof is covered with wooden shingles and has lead flashings at the angles, topped with a wrought iron weather cock. Each column bears a maker's mark, though it has become difficult to read due to layers of paint.
Access to the bandstand is provided by a wooden bridge on the northern side, which is supported by two concrete cut-waters. The bridge deck features balustrades on either side with lattice panels and includes a drawbridge panel of decking at the northern end, positioned between the northern cutwater and the shore. Inside, the bandstand has a flat ceiling that serves as a sounding board.
