Description
26 and 27 St George's Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1830 to 1840, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of brick with painted stucco sills and feature a hipped slate roof. There is a party-wall stack on the front roof slope, which has oversailing courses and pots. A timber lattice porch is present at number 26.
The houses have a double-depth plan with later two-storey entrance wings that are set back from the main facade and have parapeted roofs. There are single-storey service ranges at the rear. The buildings rise to three storeys and have six first-floor windows arranged in a 1:4:1 pattern. All windows are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals, topped with flat gauged brick arches and equipped with sills. Pilaster strips are located at the ends and center of the buildings.
The entrance to number 26 features a roll-edged step and a six-panel door, with the top four panels raised and fielded, while the bottom pair is flush-beaded. It also has a radial-pattern fanlight with margin-glazing. The entrance wing of number 27 has been brought forward to create an open porch, supported on two semi-circular gauged brick arches—one facing the front and one on the side (west). This entrance has a four-panel door, with the top pair glazed and the lower pair flush-beaded, along with a radial-pattern fanlight featuring margin-glazing. The interior has not been inspected.
