Description
Nos. 7 and 8 St George’s Square are a pair of semi-detached houses dating from the 1830s and 1840s. They are built of brick with painted stucco dressings, and have a hipped slate roof. The roof features a party-wall stack to the front and rear slopes, with overhanging details and decorative pots. A brick dentil course runs along the eaves.
The houses were originally designed with a double-depth plan. The entrance to No. 7 is located in the return elevation to the west, while the entrance to No. 8 has been repositioned in the north wall of a single-storey wing that has been extended forwards at the east end of the building. Service ranges are located at the rear, with the range for No. 8 having been altered to two storeys. The houses have three storeys and a cellar, with two windows on the first floor. First-floor windows are 8/8 sashes, while those on the second floor are 4/4 sashes. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills and rusticated flat arches with fluted, projecting keystones. A ground-floor sash to No. 8 was altered around 1900 to a French window, retaining margin glazing in the upper section and an overlight. The front door, with an upper glazed panel, a raised and fielded centre panel, and flush-beaded lower panels, has a fanlight with radial glazing bars and a fluted timber doorcase with an open pediment. The interiors have not been inspected.
