Description
9 and 10 St George's Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1830 to 1840, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of brick with painted-stucco dressings and feature a hipped slate roof. The houses have a party-wall stack with oversailing detail and pots on both the front and rear roof slopes.
The plan consists of a double-depth layout with later flanking entrance wings that are two storeys high and set back from the main facade. There are single-storey rear service wings for No. 9 and a two-storey service wing for No. 10.
The exterior is three storeys tall and features four windows on the first floor arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. There are pilaster strips at the ends and centre, linked by a string course at the eaves made of matching brick. The first-floor windows are 6/9 sashes, the wings have 6/6 sashes, the second floor has 6/6 sashes, and the ground floor features 8/16 sashes, all set in plain reveals. The windows have rusticated flat arches with projecting keystones, and all except the ground floor have sills. The ground floor windows are accessed by two roll-edged steps. The entrance door is a 20th-century part-glazed door with a rectilinear glazing bar pattern in the fanlight, all framed within a Gibbs type surround and also accessed by two roll-edged steps.
Inside, the houses retain original features, including the staircase and other joinery. Additionally, No. 9 has louvered shutters on the ground floor. These houses are of similar design to Nos. 12 and 13 and 21 and 22 in St George's Square.
