Description

15 and 16 St George's Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1830-1840, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of brick with painted stucco dressings and feature a two-span slate roof with parapeted gables and a parapet on the front elevation. The houses have a pair of party-wall ridge stacks with oversailing detail and pots.

The plan is double-depth, with entrances in later flanking wings that are two stories tall, each wing differing in date and style. There are service wings at the rear on each side.

The exterior is three stories high, with two first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a simple square cornice and parapet on the facade, along with a bay window on No.16.

For No.15 (west), the main house has an 8/8 sash window on the first floor and a 4/8 sash on the second floor, all set in plain reveals with sills and rusticated flat arches featuring projecting fluted keystones. The ground floor has a canted bay under a slated roof, with 6/1, 8/2, and 6/1 sashes. The flanking wing has two first-floor windows, one 8/1 and one 6/1 sash, in plain reveals with matching stucco dressings. The entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight, set between abbreviated canted bays; the left bay has an 8/8 and a 6/6 sash, while the right bay has a 6/6 sash and a four-panel door with an overlight, all under a lean-to ornamental slate roof. An elliptical timber arch on engaged columns spans between the bays.

For No.16 (east), the main house has a less elegant mid-20th century canted, flat-roofed bay on the first and ground floors, with 4/4, 6/6, and 4/4 sashes on each floor, and a 4/8 sash on the second floor similar to No.15. The flanking wing features three first-floor and one ground-floor window, all 1/1 sashes in plain reveals with sills and eared lintels. The entrance has a part-glazed panel door with a plain fanlight, topped by a moulded semi-circular arch with a projecting keystone, all supported on corbels.

The interior has not been inspected.
