Description
This is a villa, built around 1830 to 1840, located on St George’s Square in Worcester. It abuts No. 17. The villa is constructed of brick with an ornate painted-stucco facade and has a hipped slate roof. It features pairs of chimney stacks at each end-wall, with overhanging details and decorative pots. An ornamental cast-iron gutter runs along the front elevation, featuring lion's head bosses.
The plan is of a double-depth design, tapering to fit the corner plot, with the main entrance located to the right of the principal elevation. A single-storey service range is situated to the rear left.
The exterior is three storeys high and has three windows on the first floor. The stucco detailing includes quoins and rusticated surrounds to the ground-floor windows. Ground-floor window sills are supported by pairs of corbel brackets. First-floor windows have architraves, a decorated frieze, console brackets, and a cornice. Second-floor windows have a continuous sill band with corbels, panelled pilasters topped by a continuous guilloche frieze and a dentil cornice. A Doric-style doorcase extends across the full width of the facade. All the windows are sash windows with 6/6 glazing. Two roll-edged stone steps lead to the entrance archway, which contains an open lobby with a ceramic tiled floor and a modillion cornice to the ceiling. The front door is a five-panel design with the top four panels raised and fielded, and the bottom panel flush-beaded with an incised elliptical motif. A radial pattern fanlight is above the door. A semi-circular-headed staircase window with 12/9 sash windows is present on the east return elevation.
The interior is believed to retain original decorative plasterwork and joinery, including the staircase, shutters, and doors.
