Description
The gateway to the Church of St George, dated 1938, consists of gates, gate piers, and flanking walls. It is constructed from rustic red brick with cream-coloured stone details and features wrought-iron gates. The principal pair of gate piers is connected by approximately 2.5 meters of flanking wall to a shorter outer pair of piers. The walls are slightly curved in plan, with a concave ramp leading up to the main piers.
The piers are square with inset corners and raised panels, and they have chamfered top plinths. The stone detailing includes plain wall coping linked to the main piers by scrolled brackets, ornate pier caps with moulded cornice details, and ball finials on top. The gates are made up of mainly vertical bars topped with central scroll decoration and urn finials. Each gate features a small shield on the hinge side, displaying the cross of St. George on the left and a red rose on the right.
On the left-hand pier, there is a bronze plaque inscribed with the words, "ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILHELMENA ROSS-MACKENZIE OF THIS PARISH WHO PASSED AWAY ON JULY 4TH 1938."
