Description
Two semi-detached houses, built around 1830 to 1840, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of brick with painted stucco dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof. A party-wall ridge stack features an overhanging detail and decorative pots.
The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan. Later flanking entrance wings, two storeys high with a parapeted roof, are set back from the main facade. There are also two-storey rear service wings.
The exterior presents three storeys and a cellar. The facade has four windows on the first floor, arranged as a 1:2:1 pattern. Pilaster strips mark the ends and the centre, connected by a string-course at the eaves, all made of matching brick. The windows have 6/6 sashes on the first and ground floors, and 3/6 sashes on the second floor, all set in plain reveals, sills, and flat, gauged-brick arches. The main entrance features a five-panel door, with the upper four panels raised and fielded. The lower panel is flush-beaded; the fanlight above the door to number 22 has a petal design in the glazing bars, and both doors have rusticated surrounds with projecting keystones. External blind boxes are fitted to the windows of the main elevation, although the example on number 21 is a simpler design.
The interior has not been inspected.
The design of these houses is similar to numbers 9 and 10, and 12 and 13, in St George's Square.
