Description

Croft House, with an attached outbuilding and boundary wall, dates from approximately 1820 to 1840 and has undergone later alterations. The house is constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof. The gable ends have curvilinear parapets incorporating paired brick chimney stacks with oversailing detail and chimney pots. Brick and slate rear service ranges are also present. A brick boundary wall approximately 2 metres high and 75 metres long runs along the east, south, and west boundaries of the site, extending from the stable block and featuring brick coping and piers with pyramidal stone caps; 20th-century steel gates replace earlier gates.

The house has a double-depth plan and an entrance in the return (south) elevation. It is two storeys high with attics and cellars. The west elevation, facing Stephenson Road, features four first-floor windows arranged 2:2, with stucco detailing including sills, a plinth, pilasters with capitals at each end and centre, a plain frieze with a moulded top, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The front and rear cornices are linked by a string course on the return elevation to the north. The stucco is scored to resemble ashlar. The four ground-floor windows and the first-floor windows are 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. Three flat-roofed dormers with side-hung casements are partially concealed behind the blocking course.

The south elevation facing Albany Terrace has a single first-floor window. It also includes end pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a central Tuscan-style porch. The entrance door has six panels: the bottom pair are flush-beaded, the upper panels raised and fielded, and it features an overlight with a central vertical glazing bar and margin-glazing. A 6/6 sash window is above the entrance, and a 3/6 sash window is in the gable end parapet. A single-storey rear service wing is located at the north-east corner.

The interior retains original joinery features, including panelled shutters. A two-storey stable block with a hayloft above abuts the service wing.

Croft House is situated on the north side of Britannia Square and is part of Worcester's important Regency development, resembling No.1 Stephenson Terrace in style, although larger in size.
