Description

Chester House is a villa built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and has a hipped slate roof, with rebuilt end stacks and a string course with pots. The facade includes a parapet gutter and a cast-iron verandah with a glass roof. The building has a central hallway and a double-depth plan, standing two storeys tall with three first-floor windows. Architectural details include a plinth, full-height Doric-style pilasters at the ends and between the windows, a first-floor band, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The outer bays have 8/8 sash windows, while the centre first-floor window is a 6/6 sash with margin-lights made of coloured glass. The ground-floor windows are tall 8/12 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance door is a renewed four-panel design with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars and a tooled architrave. The flat-topped gables have coping and a casement window in the attic. The verandah is supported by scrolled uprights, and there is a later 19th-century lean-to conservatory on the right.

Inside, Chester House retains some original features, including shutters, a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, and decorative plasterwork in the hall with a frieze that includes modillions with an anthemion design. This house is part of a group of listed buildings in Britannia Square, which were all started in 1820 and are arranged around a large green, with the main house known as Springfield. It shares similarities with other smaller developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
