Description

No. 41 Britannia Square is a villa built around 1820, featuring later additions and alterations. The exterior is finished in painted stucco over brick, with brick on the returns. It has a hipped slate roof with a central stack that has oversailing details and pots, as well as a lead parapet gutter along the facade. A wrought-iron balcony enhances the building's appearance. The villa has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a basement, displaying four first-floor windows.

Architectural details include full-height Doric-style pilaster strips at the ends and center, a frieze, and a first-floor band. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes with louvered shutters, while the ground floor features tall 6-pane casement windows with fanlights, all set in plain reveals with sills. The basement openings have been renewed. The entrance is located on the right return, featuring a door with six fielded panels and a fanlight with a teardrop motif, along with panelled reveals. A flight of renewed steps leads to a Doric-style porch with an entablature.

The ground floor has a continuous balcony with a balustrade that includes scrolled lozenge and circle motifs, extending to the side of the porch. At the rear, there is a full-height service range that has been partially rebuilt and extended, with 3/6 and 6/6 sash windows. The interior retains original features, including panelled shutters.

No. 41 is part of a group of listed buildings in Britannia Square, which were developed starting in 1820 around a large green, with the main house being 'Springfield'. This villa is comparable to similar, smaller developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
