Description
North Lodge is a detached house built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and has a hipped slate roof with stone sills. The house has stucco stacks on the rear wall and ridge, with brick oversailing detail and pots. The design is double-fronted and single-depth, with an asymmetric principal and entrance facade facing east. It has two storeys and a cellar, with four first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a plain plinth and frieze, scored to imitate ashlar. All windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills. To the right of the entrance is a full-height bow with two curved windows per floor, and a single-window range to the right of the bow. The entrance features three roll-edged steps leading to a five-panel door, with a flush double-beaded bottom panel and raised and fielded upper panels with bolection mouldings. The doorcase is timber with pilasters, a dentilled frieze, and a cornice, topped by a radial pattern fanlight. The left side of the house facing into the Square has two 6/6 sashes on each floor, while the right side is brick with two blind windows on the first floor.
Inside, the house retains original features, including the staircase and panelled doors. The single-window range to the right of the bow at the north end of the house may be a later addition, but map evidence indicates it was present in 1886.
North Lodge is part of a group of listed buildings in Britannia Square, which were started in 1820 and planned around a large green where the main house, Springfield, is located. It is comparable to other smaller developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
