Description

Nos. 6 and 8, Albany Terrace are a pair of semi-detached houses, constructed around 1820 to 1840, with later additions and alterations. They are located on the north side of Britannia Square in Worcester, and are part of an important 18th and 19th century townscape development.

The houses are primarily stucco over brick, with a brick return wall visible. They have hipped slate roofs and two shared chimney stacks; the front stacks are stuccoed with cornices and decorative pots, while the rear stack is brick with an overhanging detail and pots. The plan is of a double-depth arrangement with entrances within the return elevations.

The exterior is two storeys and a basement, featuring 4 windows to the first floor. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, sills, corner pilasters with capitals, a simple frieze with a moulded upper edge, and recessed rectangular panels, with the stucco scored to resemble ashlar. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes, mirroring the first-floor design, set in plain reveals with sills. Steps and paving lead to the basement area of the right-hand house, where there is a part-glazed door and window. A single-storey stucco link connects to the adjacent house to the left, providing an entrance with a six-panel door (the lower pair flush-beaded, the upper four raised and fielded) and a radial pattern fanlight. The right-hand house also has a Tuscan-style porch with square columns, leading to a three-panel door with a radial fanlight. A two-storey wing projects to the right of the porch. The return elevation features a mix of 8/8, 6/6, and 4/4 sash windows. A two-storey brick service range is located to the rear of the left-hand house, with a 20th-century extension nearby. A larger, three-storey wing stands to the rear of the right-hand property.

The interiors are noted to retain some original features, including panelled shutters. The basement area is enclosed by cast-iron railings, with a decorative design of hearts and anthemions on the right-hand side.
