Description

No. 44 Britannia Square is a detached house built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and a hipped slate roof, with stucco end-stacks that have brick oversailing details and pots. The house has a double-fronted, double-depth plan and includes an entrance on the right side. It stands two storeys tall with a cellar and has four first-floor windows.

Architectural details include a plain plinth, corner pilasters with egg-and-dart moulding on the caps, a plain eaves frieze with a moulded top edge, and a plain band between the ground and first-floor windows. The stucco is scored to resemble ashlar. All windows are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance features a five-panel door, where the bottom pair of panels is flush double-beaded, the centre panel and upper pair are raised and fielded with bolection moulding, and the reveals are panelled with three flush double-beaded panels. Above the door is a radial pattern fanlight, and the timber doorcase has an incised geometrical design on the pilasters, with a similar design on the frieze below the cornice. A 6/6 sash window is aligned above the entrance, with a similar window on the left return.

The interior retains original features, including the staircase, panelled doors, architrave, skirtings, and plaster cornices.

All the listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and arranged around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is situated. This development is comparable to other smaller developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
