Description
40 Britannia Square is a house built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and has a concealed roof. The house has renewed end stacks with oversailing detail and pots. The layout includes a rear central stair hall and it stands three storeys tall, with four first-floor windows. Architectural details include full-height Doric-style pilasters at the ends, a continuous first-floor sill band, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are 6/6 sashes on the first floor and 3/6 sashes on the second floor, all set in plain reveals with sills. The first-floor windows have louvered shutters with catches. The entrance is located on the right side and features a replacement part-glazed door with an overlight and a Doric-style porch. There is a two-storey service range at the rear, which retains various sash windows including 9/6, 6/6, 8/8, and 3/3.
Inside, the house retains some original joinery, including a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, as well as six-panel doors with moulded architraves. Some original decorative plasterwork is present, including cornices, with the hall cornice featuring modillions and an anthemion design. The cellar is said to still have wine stillages.
All the listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green, with the main house known as 'Springfield'. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
