Description
No. 38 Britannia Square is a villa built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and a hipped slate roof, with rebuilt end stacks on both sides, a string course, and chimney pots. The facade has a parapet gutter and a central hallway, with a double-depth plan. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, full-height Doric-style pilasters at the ends and between the windows, a first-floor band, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The outer bays have 8/8 sash windows, while the center first-floor window has a 6/6 design with margin lights made of coloured glass. The ground-floor windows are tall 8/12 sashes. The entrance door is a four-panel design with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars. The attic has flat-topped gables with copings and a casement window.
Inside, the villa retains original plasterwork and joinery, including a narrow open well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The left ground-floor room has a white marble fireplace, and there are moulded cornices, with the hall cornice featuring a decorative frieze with modillions and an anthemion design.
No. 38 is part of a group of listed buildings in Britannia Square, which were started in 1820 and arranged around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is located. It is comparable to similar, though smaller, developments in Worcester such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
