Description

Nos. 28 and 30, along with the attached railings to No. 30, form a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1820 to 1840. They are part of a group value context and are situated on the north side of Britannia Square in Worcester, contributing to an important Regency-era development.

The houses are constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof. They feature two shared party-wall stacks, stucco to the front roof slope with a cornice and decorative pots, and a similar brick stack to the rear slope with overhanging detail and pots. The left-return elevation is of unpainted brick. Cast-iron railings with twisted posts and circular-section rails are attached to the basement light-wells of the left-hand house.

The design follows a double-depth plan with entrances located on the return elevations. The houses are two storeys high with a basement, and possess four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 configuration. Stucco detailing includes sills, a plinth, corner pilasters with capitals, a simple frieze with a moulded upper edge, and recessed rectangular panels. The stucco is scored to resemble ashlar. The ground-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, matching the first-floor windows, and are set in plain reveals with sills. A porch is located on the left return, and there's an incised curvilinear panel detailing to the entrance link on the right.

The left return has a central Tuscan-style doorcase with two roll-edged stone steps leading to a five-panel door. The bottom pair of panels are flush-beaded, the central panel is raised and fielded, and the upper pair are glazed. An 8/8 sash window is positioned above the door. The entrance to the right-hand house is set back within a single-storey link connecting it to the adjacent building at No. 26 Albany Terrace. This entrance has a recessed door behind an arch, featuring a five-panel door with a glazed upper pair and flush-beaded lower panels. The linking range exhibits a curvilinear coped parapet with a central ball.

The interiors remain uninspected. Subsidiary features include the railings to the light wells, which have twisted posts and circular-section rails. Nos. 28 and 30 share a similar appearance with Nos. 6 to 26 (even) within Albany Terrace.
