Description
Nos 12 and 14 Albany Terrace are a pair of semi-detached houses, located on the north side of Britannia Square in Worcester. They were built around the 1820s and 1840s, and have undergone later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof. The front roof slope has a cornice and decorative pots, while the rear has a brick stack with oversailing detail and pots, extended in height. The right-hand return is of painted brick. Replacement cast-iron area railings are present to the right.
The properties are arranged with a double-depth layout and entrances in their return elevations. They have two storeys and a basement, with four windows to the first floor (arranged as 2:2). The stucco detailing includes sills, a plinth, corner pilasters with capitals, a simple frieze with a moulded upper edge, and recessed rectangular panels. The stucco is scored to resemble ashlar, and there are incised curvilinear panels to the entrance link on the left-hand side. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sash windows, matching those on the first floor, set in plain reveals with sills.
The left-hand house has an entrance in a single-storey link set back between the return elevation and the adjacent house to the left. The entrance door is panelled, with the bottom pair of panels flush-beaded, the centre and upper panels raised and fielded, and an extra-height radial pattern fanlight. A curvilinear coped parapet tops the link. A two-storey extension is situated further to the rear, behind the link. The right-hand house has an entrance in a set-back single-storey link with the adjacent house, No 10 Albany Terrace. It features a similar entrance door and radial pattern fanlight with margin glazing. A flat-roofed first-floor extension has been added above the entrance arch, with a 6/6 sash window. Two-storey wings extend to the rear, one on each side. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Albany Terrace forms part of a significant Regency development in Worcester and is similar in appearance to Nos 6-10 and 16-30 Albany Terrace.
