Description
Severn Lodge is a house built around 1820 to 1840, with later alterations and additions. It features painted stucco over brick and has a hipped slate roof. The gable ends have curvilinear parapets that include paired chimney stacks made of stucco with brick oversailing detail and pots. A lattice timber verandah with a zinc tented roof is present.
The house has a double-depth plan with the entrance located on the return elevation. It is two storeys high with attics and cellars, and there are three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes sills, a plinth, end pilasters with capitals, a plain frieze with a moulded top, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The front and rear cornice are connected by a string course on the return elevations, and the stucco is scored to resemble ashlar.
On the ground floor, there are two 6/6 sash windows on the left, as well as matching windows on the first floor, all set in plain reveals with sills. The lower right section has a later bay with French windows and an overlight, with two steps for access and fixed windows with transom lights on the returns. There are two flat-roof dormers with side-hung casements that are partially hidden behind the blocking course. A full-width verandah is present on the ground floor, and there are louvered external shutters on the ground-floor windows.
The entrance is located in the right (south) return and features a six-panel door, with the bottom pair being flush-beaded and the upper panels glazed. Above the door is an overlight with a central vertical glazing bar and margin-glazing. A 19th-century lean-to conservatory with heavy chamfered framing and a pair of part-glazed doors with diminished stiles and some coloured glazing encloses the entrance. At the rear left, there are single-storey service ranges made of brick and slate. The interiors are noted for retaining original joinery features, including panelled shutters. Severn Lodge is similar in style, although smaller, to No. 32 Albany Terrace.
