Description

No. 50 is a villa built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and a hipped slate roof, along with two pairs of stucco end-stacks that have cornices. The property includes a timber verandah with a tented light metal roof and a brick boundary wall at the rear. The villa has a double-depth plan with a side entrance and a single-storey service range to the rear right.

The garden facade is two stories high with three first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes outer pilaster strips, a continuous frieze and cornice, and wide eaves. The first-floor windows have round blind-arches above with a scalloped fan motif and a first-floor band. The first-floor features 8/8 sash windows, while the ground floor has tall 8/2 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The lattice work of the verandah uprights and frieze is based on an oval design. The entrance is located in the right return and features a renewed six-panel door with a fanlight that has decorative glazing, along with a distyle Tuscan porch and tall 6/6 sashes on either side. The rear of the house includes 4/8 and 8/8 sash windows.

Inside, the villa retains original features, including panelled shutters. The attached garden boundary wall at the rear has an elliptically arched pedestrian entrance with a Gibbs type surround, a vertically boarded door, and a brick pilaster to the left, along with another entrance to the left without a surround. The wall extends for approximately four metres, and the rear of the outshut continues the wall to Back Walk. The boundary wall appears to have been rebuilt using original bricks. The rear walls of Nos. 49-53, which front Back Walk, form a continuous original feature of the streetscape.

All the listed buildings in Britannia Square create a unified group, initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is situated. This development is comparable to similar, though smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
