Description

Nos. 10 and 12 Ganton Street, including No. 17 Newburgh Street, form a terrace block of houses with shops. These buildings likely date from the early 18th century but were altered in the early 19th century when shop fronts were added as part of the redevelopment of the area in the 1820s. The exterior is stuccoed with concealed roofs and consists of three storeys, with each building being two windows wide. The ground floors feature a continuous range of early 19th-century pilastered shop fronts that include an entablature and large display windows. The upper floors have slightly recessed exposed box frames for the sash windows, most of which have glazing bars and flat arches. The parapet is topped with a cornice. No. 17 Newburgh Street has a splayed corner shop entrance and a plain square-headed house doorway on its three-bay return. The north side, which is recessed from Newburgh Street, features a three-storey weatherboarded framed closet wing. The return of No. 17 retains a dog leg, closed string staircase with turned balusters.
