40, Carnaby Street W1

No. 40 Carnaby Street is a terrace house built around 1720, which has been altered and refronted in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stock brick and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys high and is three windows wide. The shop front has been altered in the 19th century, but the house door to the right still features part of a slender pilaster frame and a rectangular fanlight with a decorative radial pattern. The upper floors have recessed late 19th-century sash windows set under segmental arches, and there is a parapet with coping. At the rear, the building retains flush framed segmental arched sashes in a rendered wall.

Inside, the property preserves many original features, including fully ovolo moulded panelling in the first and second floor rooms, with box cornices that are doubled on the first floor. There are angled chimneypieces in the rear rooms, along with original panelled doors and shutters. The dog leg staircase, which rises from the early 19th-century ground to first floor flight, remains intact, featuring a closed architrave moulded string, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and columnar newels.
