194-224, Cable Street E1

This is a row of late 18th-century terraced buildings numbered 194 to 224, located on the south side of Cable Street in London. The buildings are constructed of stock brick and feature a parapet. They are generally three storeys high with a basement, and most have two windows. The windows are recessed, and originally had glazing bars. The doorcases are made of wood and incorporate shaped brackets and dentilled or reeded cornices, with variations including plain reveals, an arch and flat hood, and a pediment with a festooned frieze. Number 206 has a doorcase matching the others, although the visible windows now have only vertical glazing bars. Number 214 features a notable early 19th-century shop front with four shaped brackets and a segmental fanlight. Number 220 has three dormers in a slate mansard roof. A corbelled brick band sits below a stone coping. Wide stucco bands run along the exterior, one below the top floor sills and another at the first floor sill level. Numbers 194 to 224 contain modern glazing within the original window openings, which have segmental heads. Number 220’s central doorcase has a stucco surround, an open pediment, plain engaged Doric columns, and a semi-circular fanlight. A coachway entrance to the rear ground floor is present at number 200. Later industrial buildings at the rear of number 200 are not included in the listing.

The Dolphin Public House (numbers 192-224) and number 230 (The Britannia Public House), along with the Town Hall and gate piers, form a distinct group along the south side of Cable Street.
