Description
A pair of terrace houses with shops, built around 1800 and rebuilt in the mid-19th century, with alterations. The buildings are located on the south side of New Row, City of Westminster. They are constructed of stock brickwork with a hidden roof. The buildings are four storeys high, with each having two windows. A narrow recessed party wall panel separates them.
Number 23 features a mid-19th century shop front, with a square-headed doorway and fanlight to the left. The shop front has a small display window to the right and a larger one to the left, all framed by colonette shafts, transoms, and quadrant corners to the top lights. There is an entablature-fascia detail. Number 23A has an altered shop front with a plain, square-headed house door to the left.
The upper floors contain recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set under flat, gauged arches. A parapet with coping tops the building. The buildings are listed due to their contribution to the group value of this street, which mainly consists of early 19th-century houses originally part of the 1630s Bedford Estate development of Covent Garden.
