Description

The Church of St George in the East, built in 1729 and designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, is a Grade I listed building located on Cannon Street Road in Stepney. It features white ashlar masonry and a tall western lantern tower that is accessed by steps. The main body of the church has round arched windows and an apsidal east end. The crypt has been cleared and now serves as a large hall. Notable architectural elements include pepperpot corner turrets. The interior of the church was significantly damaged during World War II, leading to the reconstruction of a smaller church within the outer walls. This alteration has resulted in a small courtyard with flats that connects to the former west end of the church, which is now defined by a glass screen. The lantern tower is a prominent landmark in the area, and the church, along with its associated rectory, walls, gates, railings, and memorials, forms a cohesive group around St George's Gardens, the church's former churchyard.
