Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the mid-19th century, located on Camberwell Grove. The houses are built of stucco, originally scored to resemble ashlar. They have a U-shaped plan, with a symmetrical elevation when viewed together.

The houses feature a two-window range, with entrances set in a recess. A one window wide, three-storey “tower” range is set at the corner. All openings are flat-arched. There is a shared entrance porch at the upper floor, with overlights connecting to the upper ranges, and a pair of windows set between. Ground-floor windows in the projecting end ranges are tripartite with architraves. A storey band runs between the basement and ground floors, and again between the ground and first floors. First floor windows have a shallow surround and an entablature with a ribbon of plain medallions. The entablature forms spandrels for the second-floor windows, which have flush surrounds. An entablature is also present over the first-floor windows of the recessed section. The towers have shallow-pitched, gable-facing roofs with projecting eaves on all sides. Stacks are located on the returns and party wall. Original sash windows include ground-floor tripartite windows with 4x4 and 2x2 panes, 6x6 windows to the side of each entrance, and 6x6 upper-floor windows, some rebuilt to an original design, with original glazing bars on the returns. The interior was not inspected. Cast-iron railings are present to the areas and stairs, with the latter being unusually elaborate. Numbers 187 and 189, nearby, are of identical design, forming a cohesive group.
