Description
The gates, piers, and railings to Camberwell Old Cemetery were built in 1856 and are designed in the Gothic Revival style to match the nearby Gate Lodge. They are constructed from ragstone with smooth stone dressings, along with cast and wrought iron elements. The main entrance features four square piers that define a single carriageway, with walkways on either side. Each pier has set back buttresses at the front and rear, and the corners are chamfered with run-out stops. The piers are topped with facing gables, which have blind returns with small dormers that end in fleur-de-lis, and each gable corner features a carved head.
The railings and gates include lower rails that create a frieze filled with trefoiled tracery and quatrefoils, with additional trefoiled tracery between the uprights. The railings extend towards the main road, forming a shallow east-facing forecourt with outer piers that are simpler in design, lacking buttresses and heads. The railings on the north side step down in height and end in a simple pier, while those on the south side rise in height, terminating in piers and railings that turn the corner onto Wood Vale. All railings are supported by elegant curved rails leading to the cemetery and are set on a low stone plinth with simply chamfered coping. Some sections of the railings have been replaced to match the original design.
