Description
The Camberwell Old Cemetery War Memorial is a tall limestone pillar topped with a flaming urn finial. The front face of the pillar features the words "OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD" encircled by a carved laurel wreath with hanging ribbons. To the bottom left of the ribbon is the coat of arms of the Navy, and to the right is the coat of arms of the Army. Below this is a raised rectangular section with a small wheeled cross at each corner. At the middle top of this section are the arms of the Royal Air Force, and beneath them is the inscription:
"THIS CENOTAPH WAS / ERECTED BY SUBSCRIBERS / TO THE WAR MEMORIAL / OF THE BOROUGH OF / CAMBERWELL AS A / TRIBUTE TO ITS SONS / WHOSE BODIES ARE REST- / ING IN THE CEMETERY AND / THROUGHOUT THE WORLD / AT THE CALL OF / KING AND COUNTRY / THEY LEFT EVERYTHING / THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM / ENDURED HARDNESS / FACED DANGER AND / FINALLY PASSED OUT OF / SIGHT OF MEN BY THE / PATH OF DUTY AND / SELF SACRIFICE / THEY DIED THAT / WE MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM / AND AT THE LAST MYSTER / THEY SHALL STAND BE- / FORE THE THRONE AN / EXCEEDINGLY GREAT ARMY / 1914 - 1918 / THEY PASSED BUT THEY / COULD NOT PASS AWAY."
Below this inscription are the arms of the Borough of Camberwell. The left face of the pillar is adorned with a carving of a flaming torch, while the back features a tall wheeled cross. The pillar stands on a plinth that bears the inscription: "EVAN COOK, JP MAYOR 1918-19 / C WILLIAM TAGG TOWN CLERK," which is set on a three-step platform.
