Description

Clifton Cottage is a house dated 1833, as indicated by a stucco cement plaque below the parapet. The building features brick in Flemish bond with painted stucco on the basement, springing and sill bands, cornice, and entrance aedicule. The roof is parapeted.

The house has two storeys over a basement and a three-window range, with the centre window blocked. All windows are set within shallow, basket-arched recesses that are connected by a sill and springing band. The elevation is bilaterally symmetrical around the entrance, which is framed by a rusticated aedicule with a round-arched recess.

The flanking ground-floor windows are round-arched and feature authentic 8x8 glazing bars, with the top sash bars forming Georgian Y-tracery. The entrance aedicule and these windows are linked by a springing band. The end range windows on the first floor also have original 8x8 sashes. The soft rubbed brick is used for the basket and round arches, while gauged brick is used for the lintels of the first-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected.
