Description

This is an early 18th-century terrace, representing the remaining portion of a significantly longer original row. Numbers 34 to 38 have two storeys, an attic, and a sunken basement, while number 40 has two storeys and a sunken basement. The terrace comprises three bays, with the right-hand bay of number 40 featuring a blank window arch above the doorway. The construction is of multicoloured stock brick with brick red dressings, specifically segmental window arches on the first floor and gauged flat arches on the ground floor, along with brick jambs, quoins, and a quasi-pilaster effect extending through the parapet on number 40. Stone-coped parapets conceal steeply pitched tiled roofs, featuring low, pedimented dormers. Tall, rectangular chimney stacks rise from the roofline. Sash windows are set in flush moulded frames, with glazing bars, and incorporate sunken panels below. The front doors consist of six, eight, and ten fielded panels; the upper panels of numbers 34 and 36 are glazed, and these properties have plain rectangular fanlights. Number 38 features a later patterned fanlight. The doorways are framed by moulded architraves and a swell frieze. Sunk panel pilasters support elaborate carved consoles and a cornice hood.

Numerous high-quality interior features remain, including several complete panelled rooms, marble fireplace surrounds (some placed in corners), shelved alcoves and cupboards (one marble-lined cupboard with a marbled shell hood). Staircases feature twist balusters, three per tread, a cut string, carved tread ends, ramped handrails, and fluted column newel posts.

Numbers 34 to 40 form a group of buildings with group value.
