Description

This is a mid-18th century terrace of six houses, numbered 30 to 36, on Royal Hill. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and originally had two windows. The houses are built of multicoloured stock brick, with the basements stuccoed except for number 36. A moulded and dentilated red brick cornice runs along the top of the houses, and a parapet with later rendering conceals the roof. Some rebuilding of the upper floors has occurred above the first-floor windows. Windows have gauged red brick arches. Windows in numbers 30 and 32 are set in near-flush frames, while the others are recessed within stucco lined reveals. The windows on the first and second floors of number 30 have later stucco friezes decorated with rosettes, and console bracketed cornices. Most of the first and ground floor windows are 19th century sash windows with margin lights, with the exception of the ground floors of numbers 32 and 34, and the first floor to the left of number 34, which have later sash windows. The second floor sash windows have varying designs: number 30 has margin lights, number 32 has a central bar, and numbers 34 and 36 have glazing bars. Each house has a door with six fielded panels, a cornice head that extends around the reveal, and is flanked by capitals of three-quarter-Doric columns. The fanlight above each door has a moulded architrave. The doorcase entablature incorporates triglyph and guttae friezes, mutule cornices, and an open pediment with mutules. Numbers 30 and 32 have wrought iron area railings with delicate lanceheads positioned on alternating tall and short standards. Numbers 34 and 36 have later cast iron railings with fleur de lys standards. Numbers 30 to 38 form a group.
