Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century terrace of houses, altered in later periods. The terrace comprises numbers 164 to 170 (even) and 170A, and each house originally had three storeys and a basement, with three windows facing the street. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with a stuccoed basement and the ground floor up to the first-floor window sills. Number 164 has flat, gauged brick window arches; the other houses have cemented lintels above the window openings. A flight of eight steps leads to the front doors, which are constructed of six ornamental panels, surmounted by a cornice and radial fanlight, all set within a panel and architrave surround. The doorcases vary: numbers 164 and 166 feature narrow, engaged columns supporting an entablature with a broken pediment; the others have fluted pilasters and moulded architraves with keystones, one featuring a vermiculate design and the other a mask. Numbers 170 and 170A are only two windows wide, and number 170A has a projecting, neo-Georgian shop front on the ground floor. The terrace is included on the list for its group value and for the variety of front doorcases.
