West Norwood Memorial Park Mausoleum Of Sophie Beard

The West Norwood Memorial Park Mausoleum of Sophie Beard is a Grade II listed structure designed in the form of a Gothic chapel. Sophie Beard passed away in 1850, and the chapel was built somewhat later, with the architect remaining unknown. Constructed from Portland stone, the mausoleum features a rectangular plan and consists of three buttressed bays topped with a pitched stone roof that has decorated cross finials.

The central entrance is a pointed arch, adorned with a hood mould and recessed moulding, supported by colonettes. The entrance is fitted with a plank door that showcases elaborate wrought iron scroll pattern hinges and decorative ironwork. On either side of the entrance, there are cusped recesses with shaped hood moulds that contain sculptural statuettes representing Faith and Hope. Beneath these sculptures are inscriptions that read "Erected as a last testament of love" and "To the memory of a perfect wife and mother." Above the entrance, there is a trefoil light with a shaped hood, and the rear elevation features original stained glass in trefoil lights.
