Description
The Rodway Mausoleum is a cemetery building constructed in 1870, designed and built by William Smith of Trowbridge. The front features a triple gabled arcade with dogtooth and moulded verge detailing at the coping, adorned with gargoyles at the bases. It has four pink granite shafts topped with floral caps. The main gable originally had a saddlestone with a cross, and below it is a trefoil-headed niche that houses a statue of the Redeemer, created by Palmer and Shepheard of Bristol. Above this niche is a trefoil arch, which has an oculus filled with wrought iron spikes and is supported by angels above the lintel. A motto is inscribed on the lintel. The doors are heavily decorated with wrought iron strapwork made by Lucas, and there are steps leading into a now derelict vault. The sides of the mausoleum are battered, featuring corner gargoyles, and the top is barrel vaulted with an apse at the end.
