Description
The Kingston and Hastings Mausoleum is a cemetery building from the circa 1870s, designed and built by local architect William Smith in a Romanesque style. It features a stone vault that was originally adorned with segmental or possibly triangular dogtooth and roll-moulded caps. The central entrance consists of two orders, showcasing pink granite nook shafts, wide palmette caps, and imposts, along with a chevron lintel that has moulded spaces and a small arcade in the outer order. There are two blind flanking arches, each with single nook shafts that display similar decorative elements on a smaller scale. The mausoleum includes bronze plates commemorating the Rev. Thomas Kingston, who died in 1867, and Rev. J. D. Hastings Trowbridge, who died in 1869, each with a shield above. Notably, the ironwork, crafted by Lucas, features a central door with decorative hinge and handle fretwork made of wrought iron, along with a striking spike array in the tympanum.
