Description
The Mortuary Chapel at St Mary's Abbey is a small chapel believed to date from the mid-19th century. It has a roughly square plan and faces west towards the burial ground. The building is constructed of stone and brick, topped with a slate roof.
The exterior features a gabled design, with the principal elevation showcasing a central timber door set within a pointed arch surround. This door is adorned with a moulded hoodmould and carved label stops, and is flanked by two-stage angle buttresses at the corners. Above the door, there is a window shaped like a Reuleaux triangle, which contains three trefoil openings, each filled with stained glass. An iron wall tie in the shape of a cross is positioned above the window. The gable is finished with moulded coping stones and a carved cross at the apex.
On the brick side elevations, there are single lancet openings framed in stone surrounds. The interior has not been inspected as of 2015.
