COLWICH TRENT AND MERSEY SK 02 SW CANAL (North side)

2/10012 Colwich Lock Cottage GV II

Lock cottage. Late C18 with minor alterations. Brick painted cream with plain tile roof 2 storeys, single pile plan. Slightly irregular 3-bay facade fronting onto canal. Two 6-light casements with stone keystones to right. Segmental headed entrance with C20 door and segmental headed window with C20 lights to left, to left bay. Three 6-light casements to 1st floor with architraves and simple entablatures. Horizontal string course parallel to sills. Moulded eaves cornice on brackets. Blind elevation to rear. Single storey former office section attached to right with C20 door and window. 4 ridge chimney stacks including 3 protruding end stacks (one to office section), including one corbelled to left side. The Trent and Mersey Canal was built between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
