Description
Colwich Lock Cottage is a lock cottage built in the late 18th century, with minor alterations. It is constructed of cream-painted brick and features a plain tile roof. The building is two stories tall and has a single pile plan, with a slightly irregular three-bay facade that faces the canal. On the right side, there are two 6-light casement windows with stone keystones. To the left, there is a segmental-headed entrance with a 20th-century door and a segmental-headed window with 20th-century lights. The first floor has three 6-light casements with architraves and simple entablatures, and there is a horizontal string course that runs parallel to the sills. The eaves cornice is moulded and supported by brackets. The rear elevation is blind. Attached to the right is a single-storey former office section, which has a 20th-century door and window. The cottage features four ridge chimney stacks, including three protruding end stacks (one on the office section), with one stack corbelled to the left side. The Trent and Mersey Canal, which the cottage is associated with, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
